When making your Clemson vs LSU predictions in Monday’s College Football Playoff national championship game, good luck finding many flaws between these two teams. It’s not hyperbole to say the winner of Clemson vs LSU will be considered one of the greatest college football teams ever.
Clemson vs LSU predictions
College football odds: Clemson Tigers vs LSU Tigers (-5, 67.5 over/under), Monday at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Game played at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, LA
LSU continued to make a statement in the College Football Playoff semifinal, blowing out Oklahoma, 63-28. And that was after the Tigers took their foot off the gas, getting out to a 49-14 lead at halftime.
The win was LSU’s record-setting sixth this season over a top 10 team.
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow continues to put up numbers that don’t seem real. Burrow threw for 493 yards and seven touchdowns in the win over Oklahoma. The Heisman trophy winner’s 29 of 39 passing on the day was actually below his 77.6 completion percentage for the season.
Racking up 692 yards of total offense might not be as possible against a Clemson defense that is far superior to Oklahoma’s.
However, LSU had over 500 total yards against solid defensive teams like Alabama, Florida, and Georgia – so this team is built to produce. LSU led the nation with 564.1 yards per game.
Sitting at third in total yards was Clemson (538.4).
Clemson was far more dominant on defense. The Tigers led the country in yards allowed per game (244.7) and points allowed per game (10.6). On the surface, LSU wasn’t as strong, but they also played a much tougher schedule than Clemson did.
That’s the one knock of Clemson – the schedule. But credit the Tigers for taking care of business, only playing one regular-season game decided by one score. Clemson fell behind early to Ohio State in their College Football Playoff semifinal game, but the Tigers did come back against one of the most talented teams in the country in a 29-23 win.
The Clemson Tigers are playing for their third national title in four years and Clemson is playing in their fifth straight College Football Playoff. This isn’t just a team taking advantage of a light schedule.
Clemson enters Monday on a 29-game winning streak, meaning quarterback Trevor Lawrence has never lost a game since taking over as the starter.
Lawrence vs. Burrow would be a very interesting debate to see who would be taken with the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, Lawrence can’t declare for the NFL Draft until after next season.
It isn’t just at quarterback where these two teams are evenly matched. Whether it’s at wide receiver, running back, or just about any other position, you really can’t go wrong with either side.
When making your Clemson vs LSU predictions, there’s also no real advantage from a coaching standpoint.
Head coach Dabo Swinney likes to play the “no respect” card for Clemson in his folksy Alabama accent. LSU head coach Ed Orgeron often isn’t taken as seriously because he sounds like a cajun Cookie Monster. Don’t let those exteriors fool you. These two can coach and get the most of their players in their own unique way.
As for my Clemson vs LSU predictions, let’s start with the over/under.
With a total of 67.5, don’t expect a defensive struggle. I’m honestly surprised the number is so low given these two teams combined to score 94.2 points per game this season. No disrespect to the Clemson defense, but I don’t know if they’ve seen an offensive unit like this. Even when going against the great Alabama teams of recent vintage. Sharps have bet the under down to this number after starting at 69.5. I think there’s value now in taking the over. Give me over 67.5 points in what could play out as a 41-35 type of game.
Trevor Lawrence prop bets: Clemson vs LSU betting odds for the 2020 College Football Playoff national championship game
In regard to the Clemson vs LSU point spread, FanDuel had the lookahead line as Clemson -1.5 prior to the College Football Playoff semifinal games. That’s a huge swing to get to Clemson +5. Now, are people overvaluing LSU as a result of their impressive performance? Maybe, but I don’t think so.
With the point spread falling from LSU -5.5 to LSU -5 as of this writing, LSU -5 is my Clemson vs. LSU pick.
Until I see someone step up and stop this LSU offense, it’s hard to bet against them. Again, no disrespect to Clemson. Sorry Dabo. I just think LSU has more weapons on offense than Clemson has the personnel to stop them on defense.
And with the game being played in New Orleans, this could be a real homefield advantage for LSU.
My only real concern is whether LSU can get enough stops against the Clemson offense. And while I don’t think this LSU defense is as good as Ohio State’s, I do believe there were some slight flaws – if you want to call them that – exposed in the semifinal that LSU can take advantage of.
FanDuel is offering an odds boost on LSU to win and 70+ total points scored. The odds have been boosted from +220 to +270, which also intrigues me.
Clemson vs LSU predictions: LSU -5, Over 67.5
