Who Will be Named the NFL Coach of the Year for the 2020-21 Season?

While there is no runaway favorite in the NFL Coach of the Year betting odds, it appears that New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has a slight edge on the field per the BetMGM oddsmakers, but his odds aren’t too low at 10/1 odds.

2020-21 NFL Coach of the Year Favorites

  • Bill Belichick, New England +1000 (Bet $100 to win $1,000)
  • Mike Vrabel, Tennessee +1400
  • Mike McCarthy, Dallas +1400
  • Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco +1600
  • Frank Reich, Indianapolis +1600
  • Kliff Kingsbury, Arizona +1600
  • Sean McDermott, L.A. Rams +1800

Not far behind Belichick is Tennessee's Mike Vrabel and new Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy at a 14/1 price in the NFL Coach of the Year betting odds, while there is a three-way tie for fourth between San Francisco's Kyle Shanahan, Indianapolis' Frank Reich and Arizona's Kliff Kingsbury.

Every coach that has won this award since 1991 has piloted his team to at least 10 wins. Jimmy Johnson was the only head coach to be named NFL Coach of the Year with a losing record, when the Dallas Cowboys went 7-9 during the 1990 season, so you have to look for teams that can win at least 10 games when handicapping this award.

It also helps to lead a team that came out of nowhere to win 10 games, as four of the last five coaches to win this award did it with teams that finished the prior season under .500.

Can Belichick win without Brady?

Belichick is one of three coaches in NFL history to be named Coach of the Year three times. Belichick is the undisputed best head coach of the last two decades, but he has only won this award in seasons where New England won at least 14 games.

He easily leads all active coaches with 304 victories in 25 seasons while still going strong with the New England Patriots and is inching closer to the all-time coaching leader in NFL win, Don Shula, at 347 victories. Shula recently passed away at 90-years-old and Belichick only needs 44 wins to pass the Pro Football Hall of Fame legend.

The bar might be a little lower for Belichick this season due to the departure of Tom Brady, and the Patriots, at 20/1, only have the 7th best odds to win the Super Bowl.

If the Patriots’ defense is a juggernaut once more, and he leads New England to another AFC East title without a star quarterback, voters would likely give Belichick even more credit for this team’s continued dominance. The division is getting slightly better, but there still isn’t a team that can definitively challenge the Patriots, so this looks to be a solid NFL Coach of the Year odds price for the best head coach in the game.

Vrabel did an excellent job leading Tennessee to the AFC Championship Game last season, but he should not be tied with McCarthy as the second favorite to win this award.

The Titans will have to take a major step forward in 2020 for Vrabel to be named NFL Coach of the Year, and that’s unlikely considering the makeup of this team. Ryan Tannehill is a decent, but not great, quarterback, and the Titans aren’t even favored to win the AFC South at BetMGM.

NFL Coach of the Year – Best Bets

McCarthy is an intriguing option though. Dallas is a slight favorite over Philadelphia to win the NFC East, and the Cowboys have the tools to be explosive on offense. CeeDee Lamb will give Dak Prescott potentially the best trio of wide receivers in the NFL, and this offensive line is still superb when healthy.

2020 Odds to win NFC EastBetMGM
Dallas Cowboys+140 (Bet $100 to win $140)
Philadelphia Eagles+150 (Bet $100 to win $150)
New York Giants+500 (Bet $100 to win $500)
Washington Redskins+700 (Bet $100 to win $700)

The Cowboys could have one of the best three or four offenses in the league, and that would be a major boost to McCarthy after years of Dallas underachieving under Jason Garrett.

What is the Top Sportsbook to Bet on the NFL?

Kingsbury is an intriguing option at 16-1 odds to win the NFL Coach of the Year award. The Cardinals may have improved more than any other team during the offseason with the additions of DeAndre Hopkins and Isaiah Simmons via the NFL Draft.

Arizona was impressive over the last four weeks of the 2019 season, however, the NFC West is still seen as very difficult even though Seattle was the luckiest team in the NFL in 2019 and Los Angeles may be declining, so a surprising 10-win season from Arizona would make Kingsbury a frontrunner.

+3000
TOP COACH RON RIVERA

Looking above at the NFC East Odds, you can see that a possible longshot to bet on the Coach of the Year Odds is Rivera at 30/1 (Bet $100 to win $3,000). Riverboat Ron has already won this award twice, and he is one of the best coaches in the NFL.

Washington has been a mess over the last quarter century, winning no more than 10 games in any season since 1991, and the Redskins bottomed out with a 3-13 record in 2019. A 10 or 11-win season in 2020 would probably lead to Rivera winning NFL Coach of the Year, and its not completely out of the question with the addition of Chase Young and a somewhat seasoned Dwayne Haskins under center.
